New Video Codec for Flash 8: On2 VPx
On2 Technologies announced that On2 video codecs (VPx, including the new VP7) were licensed for Flash. That means the new codec Flash Player 8 (maelstrom) will have is VP6 or most probably VP7 - because it's newer and better.
Here's the link to press release by On2. (via JD)
On2 also has AVC audio codec, but it's not mentioned in the press release so probably won't be included in FP8.
At on2.com you can download VP7 TrueCast Player 8 and see TrueMotion VP7 video samples yourself now! I checked a few and the quality seemed really good.
VP7 supports RGB24, RGB32, YVU9, I420, YV12, Y12I, YUY2, and UYVY...
I'll post more info in the comments as it becomes available.

Do you know what various servers On2 will stream on? I'm wondering if this will also open up the possibilities of who can stream to Flash

UPDATE:
The new codec is VP6!
Quoting from Platform Overview PDF by Kevin Lynch, available at http://www.macromedia.com/platform/ :
"Enhanced video: Video is greatly enhanced in Maelstrom, with new support for VP6 video, enabling higher fidelity display at the same bitrates. In addition, a new eight-bit alpha channel has been added, enabling blending of video seamlessly on top of any other elements in Flash applications, including compositing in real time on top of other video elements. This will enable a whole new level of interactivity in video over the Internet."

Yeah, it was confirmed (last week I think) that Flash 8 would NOT be using VP7 and that they were plenty happy/satisfied with VP6's performance.

Is there a way to use VP7 with flash. Right now I'm usin Sorenson Spark pro instead of Vp6. Any one did any benchmarks between vp6 and SSP

Hi,
I don't think there will be any way to use VP7.
As far as I'm told, VP7 requires more resources than VP6 and because Flash Player does not use hardware acceleration, resource (memory and CPU) usage is extremely important.
On2 VP6 uses more resources than Sorenson - but it's totally worth it. Quality for bandwidth is clearly better than Sorenson H263. (I'm not aware of any benchmarks though).
Best regards,
Burak
